020: Import and Export Data: free training webinar for FileMaker Citizen Developers
FileMaker can import data from many different sources, but it is rarely simple. Data from one source sometimes needs to land in separate tables. And what about field validation rules? Can we import a batch of images? What if the source data has no primary key values? In this webinar, I employ several easy yet powerful techniques to overcome these obstacles. We will create temporary fields, temporary relationships, write calculations, and use the Replace Field Contents command to enter the missing data after importing that will solidify relationships between records and make up for what your Excel data did not have. In some cases, where it makes the job easier, we’ll take the reverse appro...

    I don’t understand why anyone would want to write out all that value data in such a complicated form. I thought the whole point of JSON was to pass your data from Filemaker to someone else or a website, or to retrieve data from a website. Why would anyone want to write in the specific values? Those specific values are already in the database. What am I missing here?

    This turned a dead end into a four-lane highway for me. Thank you!!! Comment/tip: There is no "Link Data to Shapes" button in Microsoft Visio Plan 2 MSO (Version 2311 Build 16.0.17029.20140) 64-bit, but you can use "Custom Import" which provides that function. Question: Is there a way to add a custom org chart format to the OrgChart Shapes tab in the ribbon (or modify an existing one) so that the initial generation is in your desired format?

    • @AccelerateComputerTraining
      @AccelerateComputerTraining 9 месяцев назад

      If you want multiple subsummary parts on the same printed page, you should not turn on any of the page break options. It may also be useful to delete the Body part. We are not required to include a Body part on a layout. If you remove the Body part, the report will not include any real records from the table; it will only include the subsummaries (and grand summaries, if you have them).

      @@AccelerateComputerTraining Thank you for your help. I have long list in my report. so whenever the report reach the end of the page, sometimes, the "parent" subsummary is left in the previous page where the "child" subsummary is on the other page. For example: My Employee is the "parent" subsummary where the Products Sales is their "Child" subsummary -- 1 page could contain several Employees and their Sales, however sometimes the name of the employee goes at the end of the page and the Product goes to the next page (it makes inconvenience to see whose sales this belong too . • @AccelerateComputerTraining
      @AccelerateComputerTraining 9 месяцев назад

      In FileMaker’s Layout mode, we do not get much control over where page breaks fall. There is no “Keep with next” option to prevent child records from being separated from their parent subsummary. Try putting a page break before each parent subsummary.

      @@AccelerateComputerTrainingthank you. that makes no sense for them not to allow such a convenience. This would allow for a cleaner data drive and windows drive. plus in case the c: drive gets corrupted, at least the data is save on the data volume. we do not backups of the server, with backup nightly the full c volume to include data files. more work on end-users to do a granular or selected directory path backups to exclude paths not required.

      FileMaker provides a scripting language that you can use to automate tasks, including importing data, and the script can remember which fields you wish to import and in what order. Once you have written the script, you may then run the script and it will perform all the tasks you wrote into the script very quickly and accurately.

      Patrick, thanks for watching, and for your question. Sadly, there is nothing we can do to make that happen automatically. You have to do it manually. The Tools menu was only available in the Advanced version of FileMaker in versions prior to 17. The Advanced version costs a couple hundred dollars more than the Basic version. When you upgrade to v17 or above, you get Advanced automatically, because at v17, Claris stopped selling two versions of the program. However, in v17 and above, you still have to use the Preferences command and turn on the Use Advanced Tools checkbox and then re-launch FileMaker. Then the Tools menu will appear on your menu bar.

    • @AccelerateComputerTraining
      @AccelerateComputerTraining Год назад

      I like that idea. I am sure I just didn't think of it, though the expressions are quite simple. We could use this expression for the first button's label: ExecuteSQL ( "select Label from zNAV where \"Order\" = 1" ; "" ; "" ) And this for the first button's script parameter: ExecuteSQL ( "select Destination, \"View\" from zNAV where \"Order\" = 1" ; "¶" ; "" ) For the other buttons, just increment the number to 2, then 3, etc. I would probably change the names of the zNAV fields View and Order to names that were not SQL keywords so they would not have to be wrapped in escaped quotes, just to make the code prettier. I cannot think of anything else that would break, can you? Thanks for the great idea!!!
